Frequently Asked Questions About Primary Care
General Primary Care
What is primary care?
Primary care is your first point of contact for most health concerns. At Allen Internal Medicine, we provide comprehensive adult primary care, including preventive care, routine physicals, chronic disease management, acute illnesses, medication management, and coordination with specialists when needed.
Why should I have a primary care doctor?
Having an established primary care doctor helps you stay on top of preventive screenings, vaccinations, medications, chronic conditions, and changes in your health. Regular primary care can also help identify health problems early.
How often should I see my primary care doctor?
The appropriate frequency depends on your age, medical history, medications, risk factors, and health conditions. Many adults benefit from at least an annual preventive visit, while patients with chronic conditions may need more frequent follow-up.
Do you accept new patients in Allen, Texas?
Allen Internal Medicine welcomes new adult patients. Contact our office to ask about current availability, insurance participation, and appointment options.
Do I need a referral to see a primary care doctor?
Usually, you can schedule an appointment directly with a primary care practice. Some insurance plans may have specific requirements, so it is best to check your insurance benefits.
What conditions does Allen Internal Medicine treat?
We provide comprehensive adult primary care for a wide range of conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, thyroid disorders, obesity and weight concerns, coronary artery disease, respiratory illnesses, urinary tract infections, women’s health concerns, ADHD, and many other common medical conditions.
Annual Wellness Exams & Preventive Care
What is an Annual Wellness Visit?
An Annual Wellness Visit (AWV) is a preventive healthcare visit designed to review your overall health, identify health risks, update preventive care recommendations, and develop an appropriate plan for maintaining your health.
Is an Annual Wellness Exam free?
Annual Wellness Exams are free with most insurance plans, when the visit qualifies as a covered preventive or wellness service and you meet your insurance plan’s eligibility requirements. Coverage can vary by insurance company and plan, so we recommend confirming your benefits.
What happens during an Annual Wellness Visit?
Depending on the type of visit and your health needs, your appointment may include a review of your medical history, medications, health risks, preventive screenings, vaccinations, lifestyle factors, and recommended follow-up care.
Can I get lab work during my wellness visit?
Recommended laboratory testing depends on your age, medical history, risk factors, symptoms, and insurance coverage. Your provider can determine which tests are appropriate for you.
What preventive screenings should adults have?
Preventive screenings may include blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes screening, cancer screenings, vaccinations, osteoporosis screening, and other age- and risk-based assessments.
Can my Annual Wellness Visit help identify health problems early?
Yes. Preventive visits provide an opportunity to review risk factors and identify issues that may need further evaluation or monitoring.
Can I discuss medical problems during my wellness visit?
Yes, but a wellness visit and a problem-focused medical visit are not always the same service. If you have new symptoms or chronic conditions requiring evaluation, additional services may be appropriate and could be billed separately depending on your insurance plan.
Weight Loss & Obesity Management
Does Allen Internal Medicine offer medical weight-loss treatment?
Yes. We provide comprehensive weight-management care that focuses on sustainable weight loss, nutrition, physical activity, lifestyle changes, and when appropriate, prescription medications.
Do you prescribe GLP-1 medications for weight loss?
When medically appropriate, prescription weight-management medications, including GLP-1 or GLP-1–based therapies, may be considered. The appropriate treatment depends on your health history, medications, medical conditions, goals, and eligibility.
Are GLP-1 medications appropriate for everyone?
No. These medications are not appropriate for everyone. Your provider will review your medical history, medications, contraindications, potential side effects, and expected benefits before recommending treatment.
Do I need to be diabetic to receive weight-loss treatment?
No. Some medications used for weight management are specifically indicated for obesity or overweight patients with certain health risks and are not limited to people with diabetes. Eligibility depends on the individual patient and the medication being considered.
What does a medical weight-loss program include?
A comprehensive program may include medical evaluation, nutrition counseling, lifestyle recommendations, weight tracking, laboratory testing when appropriate, and prescription medication when indicated.
How much weight can I expect to lose?
Results vary significantly from person to person. Weight loss depends on the treatment used, starting weight, diet, physical activity, medical conditions, medications, and consistency with the treatment plan.
Do you provide nutrition counseling?
Yes. Nutrition counseling can be incorporated into a comprehensive weight-management plan to help patients develop realistic and sustainable eating habits.
Diabetes Mellitus
Does Allen Internal Medicine treat diabetes?
Yes. We provide ongoing primary-care management for diabetes mellitus, including monitoring, medication management, lifestyle counseling, laboratory testing, and assessment of diabetes-related risk factors.
What is Type 2 diabetes?
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition in which the body does not use insulin effectively and, over time, may not produce enough insulin to maintain normal blood glucose levels.
Can primary care manage Type 2 diabetes?
Yes. Many patients with Type 2 diabetes can receive comprehensive ongoing care through their primary care physician. Endocrinology referral may be recommended when specialized care is needed.
How often should my A1C be checked?
The appropriate frequency depends on your diabetes control, medications, treatment changes, and individual circumstances. Your provider will recommend an appropriate monitoring schedule.
Can diabetes be reversed?
Some patients with Type 2 diabetes can achieve significant improvement in blood sugar and may reach remission through substantial weight loss and lifestyle changes, sometimes with medication. However, diabetes management is individualized and should be monitored by a healthcare professional.
Can you help with diabetes-related weight management?
Yes. Weight management can be an important part of improving metabolic health and diabetes control. Your provider can discuss nutrition, exercise, medications, and other appropriate strategies.
Thyroid Disorders
Does Allen Internal Medicine treat thyroid problems?
Yes. We evaluate and manage many common thyroid disorders, including hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.
What are common symptoms of an underactive thyroid?
Symptoms may include fatigue, weight changes, feeling cold, constipation, dry skin, hair changes, and changes in mood or energy. These symptoms can have many causes, so appropriate evaluation is important.
What are symptoms of an overactive thyroid?
Symptoms can include unexplained weight loss, rapid heartbeat, anxiety, tremors, sweating, heat intolerance, and changes in bowel habits.
What tests are used to evaluate thyroid function?
Thyroid evaluation commonly includes blood tests such as TSH and, when appropriate, free T4 and other thyroid-related testing.
Can thyroid problems cause weight gain?
Hypothyroidism can contribute to weight gain, although thyroid disease is only one of many possible causes of weight changes.
Coronary Artery Disease & Heart Health
Does Allen Internal Medicine manage coronary artery disease?
Yes. Primary care plays an important role in the long-term management of coronary artery disease and cardiovascular risk factors.
What is coronary artery disease?
Coronary artery disease occurs when plaque builds up in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. It can increase the risk of heart attack and other cardiovascular complications.
What cardiovascular risk factors can primary care manage?
Primary care can help manage risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, smoking, physical inactivity, and other factors that affect cardiovascular health.
Can you manage high cholesterol?
Yes. We can evaluate cholesterol levels, assess cardiovascular risk, recommend lifestyle changes, and prescribe cholesterol-lowering medications when appropriate.
When should chest pain be treated as an emergency?
Chest pressure, severe chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, sudden sweating, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder can be signs of a medical emergency. Call 911 or seek emergency medical care immediately rather than waiting for a primary-care appointment.
High Blood Pressure
Does Allen Internal Medicine treat high blood pressure?
Yes. Blood-pressure management is a core part of primary care.
Why is high blood pressure important to treat?
Uncontrolled hypertension can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and other complications, even when a person has no symptoms.
Can lifestyle changes lower blood pressure?
Healthy eating, physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, limiting sodium, moderating alcohol intake, avoiding tobacco, and taking prescribed medications can all play important roles.
Do I need medication for high blood pressure?
Not everyone needs medication immediately. Treatment depends on blood-pressure readings, cardiovascular risk, other medical conditions, and response to lifestyle changes.
Women’s Health
Does Allen Internal Medicine provide women’s primary care?
Yes. We provide comprehensive adult primary care for women, including preventive health, chronic disease management, medication management, and evaluation of common health concerns.
What women’s health issues can primary care address?

Do you provide women’s cancer screening?
We can help determine which preventive cancer screenings are appropriate based on your age, medical history, family history, and risk factors and coordinate specialty care when necessary.
Do you perform Pap smears?
Availability of specific gynecologic services may vary. We can discuss appropriate cervical cancer screening and coordinate care with an OB/GYN when specialized services are needed.
Do you insert IUDs?
Allen Internal Medicine does not currently perform IUD insertion. We can provide primary care and coordinate referral to an appropriate OB/GYN.
Can primary care help with menopause-related concerns?
Yes. Primary care can evaluate many symptoms associated with menopause and discuss appropriate treatment options or referral when specialized care is needed.
ADHD
Does Allen Internal Medicine evaluate and treat ADHD?
Yes. ADHD evaluation and treatment may be available for appropriate adult patients following a comprehensive medical and clinical assessment.
What are common symptoms of adult ADHD?
Symptoms may include difficulty maintaining attention, organization problems, forgetfulness, impulsivity, difficulty completing tasks, and problems managing time. Similar symptoms can also occur with other conditions, so a proper evaluation is important.
Do you prescribe ADHD medications?
Medication may be considered when clinically appropriate. Treatment decisions depend on the individual’s evaluation, medical history, current medications, risks, and treatment goals.
Do I need an ADHD diagnosis before making an appointment?
Not necessarily. If you are concerned that you may have ADHD, you can discuss your symptoms with your primary care provider, who can determine whether further evaluation or referral is appropriate.
Can adults develop ADHD?
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that begins in childhood, although it may not be recognized until adulthood. Adults may seek evaluation because symptoms have become more noticeable or disruptive.
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
Can Allen Internal Medicine treat a UTI?
Yes. We can evaluate common urinary symptoms and determine whether a urinary tract infection is likely and what treatment may be appropriate.
What are common symptoms of a UTI?
Symptoms can include burning with urination, increased urinary frequency, urgency, lower abdominal discomfort, or changes in urine appearance or odor.
Do I need a urine test for a UTI?
Testing may be recommended depending on your symptoms, medical history, previous infections, pregnancy status, and other factors.
Can a UTI cause a fever?
A fever can occur with a urinary infection and may indicate a more significant infection, particularly when accompanied by back or flank pain, chills, vomiting, or feeling very ill.
When should I seek urgent care for urinary symptoms?
Seek prompt medical attention if you have significant fever, severe flank or back pain, vomiting, confusion, severe weakness, or other concerning symptoms.
Cholesterol & Preventive Cardiac Care
What is high cholesterol?
High cholesterol means that certain cholesterol or lipid levels in the blood are elevated or otherwise unfavorable. Over time, abnormal cholesterol levels can contribute to plaque formation in arteries.
Can high cholesterol be treated without medication?
Lifestyle changes can improve cholesterol levels for many people. Depending on cardiovascular risk and cholesterol levels, medication may also be recommended.
How often should cholesterol be checked?
Testing frequency depends on age, risk factors, existing cardiovascular disease, medications, and previous cholesterol results.
Respiratory & Common Acute Illnesses
Can I see my primary care doctor for a cough or cold?
Yes. Primary care can evaluate many common acute illnesses, including cough, sore throat, sinus symptoms, respiratory infections, and other non-emergency conditions.
Can primary care treat asthma and COPD?
Yes. Primary care can provide ongoing evaluation and management for many patients with asthma or COPD and coordinate pulmonary specialty care when needed.
When should I go to the emergency room instead of my primary care doctor?
Emergency symptoms may include severe difficulty breathing, severe chest pain, sudden weakness or numbness, loss of consciousness, severe allergic reactions, uncontrolled bleeding, or other potentially life-threatening symptoms. Call 911 for a medical emergency.
Medication Management
Can my primary care doctor manage my medications?
Yes. Medication review and management are important parts of primary care. We can review prescription medications, assess effectiveness and side effects, and help identify potentially unnecessary or conflicting medications.
Can you refill my medications?
Medication refills depend on the medication, your treatment history, monitoring requirements, and whether an appointment or laboratory testing is needed.
Why does my doctor sometimes require an appointment before refilling a medication?
Certain medications require periodic monitoring of symptoms, blood pressure, laboratory results, side effects, or other safety considerations.
Lab Testing & Health Monitoring
What laboratory tests might my primary care doctor order?
Depending on your symptoms and health risks, testing may include blood counts, metabolic testing, cholesterol, diabetes testing, thyroid testing, kidney and liver function, vitamin levels, urine testing, and other appropriate studies.
Can I get lab work even if I feel healthy?
Some preventive laboratory testing may be appropriate based on age, risk factors, medical history, medications, and preventive-care recommendations.
How will I receive my test results?
Results may be communicated through the practice’s patient portal, phone, or other office communication methods depending on the test and clinical situation.
Physical Exams & Preventive Medicine
Do I need a physical every year?
Many patients benefit from an annual preventive health assessment. The specific type and frequency of examination depend on your age, health status, insurance benefits, and individual needs.
What vaccinations should adults receive?
Adult vaccination needs vary by age, medical conditions, occupation, travel, pregnancy status, previous vaccination history, and other factors. Your primary care provider can review which vaccinations may be appropriate.
Can primary care help with cancer prevention?
